BBMAC Hosts Biggest Year of College Training Camps to Date

February 23, 2017

At Coronado BBMAC, we are excited to announce that our 2016/2017 college training camp season was the most successful season yet! Overall, we welcomed 28 swim teams to Coronado for their training camp.

Not only did the college teams flock to our facility, we also hosted the US Open Water National Swim Team in August. We were their final training ground before heading to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

While the fiscal year will officially end in June, we’ve already surpassed our highest team count from the 2014/2015 season. We had 26 teams that training camp season. College teams complete their camps between mid December and the end of January.

The final number of swimmers for this past season still needs to be totaled, but know that over 850 swimmers and coaches came from all over the United States (and even Canada) to enjoy our glorious Coronado shores.

For the community, this is an incredible economic boost during the slowest tourist time of the year. Teams stay on the island for one to two weeks while they complete advanced swimming training at our pool and weight room facility. They also complete cross training regiments at the beach and utilize the Coronado High School’s track field. Teams average between 20-30 swimmers.

Staying locally, these teams booked over 200 rooms at local hotels. Add in three square meals a day, and they gave a good boost to the neighborhood restaurants and grocery stores.

Our slice of paradise entices teams from all over, but we are particularly attractive to our friends in the north. When teams from Alaska showed up this winter, it was negative 20 degrees back home! We’re not even sure how a temperature like that can be real. Needless to say, they soaked up our sunshine and 70-degree weather. Teams from Wisconsin, Washington, Ottawa, and New York also enjoyed slipping away from unusually frigid winters.

It’s not just snow-burdened states that venture to our shores. We also hosted teams from Texas and Kansas. The appeal of our golden beaches and perfect training temperature keep them coming back year after year.

Which reminds us, we’ve already started booking up pool time for next year. In fact, these slots are rapidly filling up. We wouldn’t be surprised to see next season break this year’s record, at the rate the pool has been filling up.

Add in our mile of golden beach with ideal weather, and it will also be the best training camp yet.
