Planning Made Simple—The Complete Guide to Hosting a Training Camp in Coronado

September 26, 2015

Coronado has been known as one of the premier tourist destinations in California. But, the biggest kept secret is that Coronado is home to a world-class swimming facility. BBMAC has been hosting elite swimming teams under the radar for years. Each winter we entice teams to escape frigid winters and enjoy our slice of heaven. You can see the long winter instantly evaporate from swimmers the moment they exit the airport and start soaking in our sunshine.

With teams training after tourist season dies down, they will enjoy the quiet and serene island like locals. Well, locals who train like crazy and can complete a (insert impressive swimming stat). But you get the idea.

So if you are keen on escaping winter and training in paradise, check out the below guide. We have outlined everything you need to make planning your training camp as simple as possible.

Lodging

We have negotiated special swim team deals with 5 hotels on the island and a San Diego hostel. Know you are getting the best rate, and that these hotels will be fully equipped to host your teams. Many allow 4-5 swimmers per room. Depending on your hotel selection, some offer kitchen suite options and perks like continental breakfast.

All of the on-island accommodations are within walking distance of BBMAC:

  • Crown City Inn
  • Coronado Inn
  • Glorietta Bay
  • Coronado Island Inn
  • El Cordova Hotel Package

We are currently running a special, off-season deal for February where our Coronado based partners are offering the LOWEST RATES ever! They slashed their regular prices and have created the best swim team packages we’ve seen.

Transportation

Coronado sits an easy 10 miles from the San Diego International Airport. For the traditional tourist, an Uber or Lyft runs about $20 with a taxi about $35-$40. With an entire team in tow, you will want to arrange for a shuttle.

Here are two reliable shuttle and van options:

Once on the island, everything is within walking distance. In fact, coaches frequently comment that they save $1,000s not hiring car services or renting vehicles while staying on the island.

The entire city of Coronado is only 2 miles by 3 miles. BBMAC is located in the heart of the island to provide easy accessibility to everything you need. Our island hotel partners are all within walking distance. Everything you need on the island (grocery stores, convenience stores, cross training facilities) is all within walking distance.

For San Diego excursions, we highly recommend the ferry.

The Ferry departs from Ferry Landing on the North side of the island daily. It drops off at the San Diego Broadway Pier (right next to the USS Midway and walking distance of Little Italy) and then at the Convention Center (which places you in the heart of the Gaslamp District).

The 15-minute boat ride gives you sweeping views of the San Diego skyline and the Coronado Bridge. Depending on the season, you might catch dolphins playing in the bay as well.

Boat passes are $4.75 and can be purchased at any of the ferry landings.

Groceries & Restaurants

Most teams want to enjoy healthier home-cooked options while visiting. Especially if you choose the kitchen suite options with our partnering hotels, you’ll want to stock up on groceries. It also helps keep costs down.

Here are two nearby, great grocery stores:

  • Boney’s Bayside Market
  • Vons

Occasionally you may want to venture out and enjoy the delectable dining that Coronado and San Diego offer. We highly recommend testing out the Mexican food while you are so close to the border.
